A school bus drops students off at Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical Center, which had the highest number of school saftey offenses in the latest annual state School Safety Reports. Overall, the number of incidents at the school and across the county has been declining.

State police and county prosecutors are investigating a police officer's shooting of a man in a northeastern Pennsylvania shopping center parking lot. Investigators in Luzerne County said the suspect was shot at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday in the center on the border of Hanover Township and Wilkes-Barre.

Members enrolled in Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania's Affordable Care Act plans will see their premium rates rise by an average of 6.9 percent in 2015. Officials for the Wilkes-Barre-based insurer declined to specify how many members are covered by its Affordable Care Act plans.

Homes and businesses in Avoca, Dupont and Duryea as well as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport lost power at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday. "By utilizing our recently installed Smart Grid equipment, PPL was able to automatically and remotely switch 1,257 customers to other circuits, restoring service to those customers in 11 minutes," PPL representative Paul Canevari said.

Streets in part of Luzerne County were blocked off after authorities say an officer fired his gun in a busy shopping area parking lot. Police swarmed a Family Dollar parking lot along Carey Avenue in Hanover Township around 2:30 p.m. after 911 calls came in of gun shots fired.

Jury selection began Tuesday before Luzerne County Judge David Lupas for the trial of a man from East Stroudsburg accused of sexually assaulting a Wilkes University student in her dormitory room last year. Chukwuka Enyere Anamege, 20, was charged by Wilkes-Barre police with two counts of indecent assault and a single count of indecent exposure.
